Neighborhoods and neighbors — Edmond is full of them, and they routinely remind any potential developer of their presence.
In the ongoing battle over what can be built on a piece of land at the intersection of Covell and Coltrane Roads, the residents of a nearby neighborhood have been squaring off with a proposed Walmart Neighborhood Market. At a glance, it would appear to be a match made in heaven. Who wouldn’t want a grocery store within a minute’s drive? But this is Edmond we’re talking about, and nothing gets built without a lot of complaining.
I grew up in Edmond, but I don’t claim to understand the ins and outs of real estate law or why large corporations make the specific decisions they do. Still, as an outside observer, it seems fairly clear in this instance that the developer is in the right. The courts think so, too, and have thought so for a decade now.
No concessions or pitched roofs are needed in this case, as humorous as that would be to see, so it appears the way may be paved for development to begin. Perhaps the neighbors will be a little more, um, neighborly once they have a source for last-minute items and such, but given the city’s track record with this sort of thing, the path to getting there could be as tedious as a self-checkout lane.
